How to Keep Your Hoof Nippers Performing Like New: ICAR Nipper Maintenance Tips

Posted by

To get the best performance and longest lifespan from your ICAR hoof nippers, a little regular maintenance goes a long way. We recommend taking a few minutes at the end of each work week to follow these simple care steps:

1. Oil the Bolt Joint
Apply a few drops of oil directly into the bolt hole of the nipper. Then, open and close the nippers vertically and horizontally several times. This helps the oil penetrate the joint and flush out any trapped dirt or debris. Built-up grime can lead to bolt seizure or, worse, a break — so keeping this area clean and lubricated is essential.

2. Protect Against Rust
Once the bolt is oiled, apply a light coat of oil to the handles and the head of the nippers. Use a soft cloth to spread the oil across the entire tool. This step helps prevent rust caused by moisture and ensures smooth operation.

3. Trim Clean Hooves Only
Before trimming, always take the time to remove stones, nails, or other debris from the hoof. Hoof nippers are not designed to cut through hard materials like rocks — and doing so can damage or dull the blades.

Using your nippers on a dirty hoof is like taking a precision-built machine onto a rough, unmaintained road — it’s going to shorten its lifespan. Keep the path clear, and your tool will reward you with smooth, efficient performance.

These simple steps will help keep your tools in peak condition — and ensure you get the most out of every trim.
